A 15-year-old female is the fourth Lake County resident to die of complications from the H1N1 flu virus and the 29th in Illinois, county health officials reported Wednesday.
The girl had multiple underlying chronic conditions which increased her vulnerability to the virus, according to a release from the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center. She was hospitalized and died Tuesday.
Officials said the girl was home-schooled and not affiliated with any public or private school.
Since April, Lake County has reported 54 hospitalizations and four deaths from the virus, the release said. The prior deaths include a 74-year-old Gurnee man, a 41-year-old Gurnee woman and an 80-year-old Long Grove woman.
As of Oct. 30, the Illinois Department of Public Health had reported 731 hospitalizations and 28 deaths statewide. While flu activity continues to increase, the severity of illness does not appear to be getting worse, the release said.
The Lake County Health Department received its first shipment of H1N1 vaccine on Oct. 26, which it distributed through five walk-in clinics. It currently has depleted its supply, but additional shipments are expected soon, the release said.
