Forget about ice cream or cheeseburgers going straight to your hips, new research shows it goes to the brain, CBS station KCNC-TV reports.
Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center have discovered certain fats go to the brain and then block the chemicals which tell us to stop eating.
And the study found the effect may last up to three days. That means once a person eats something with those fats, they can end up craving them for up to three days, explaining why people who splurge on Friday or Saturday end up feeling hungrier at the beginning of the work week.
The worst fat is one called a palmitic acid. It's a saturated fat found in beef, cookies, ice cream and other snack foods as well butter, cheese and milk.
Dr. Hnida said study after study shows low fat diets seem to be the most effective for losing weight and keeping it off and this finding might explain part of that success.
"This is not a one-size fits all study," he did caution. "I think people have different thresholds for fat and different thresholds at different times. Take things like menstrual cycles, fatigue and depression, all affect brain chemistry and may play a role in food cravings."
The study is in the September issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation."
