Group Ranks Cell Phones By Radiation Levels

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Not all cell phones are equal. Some emit radiation at eight times the levels of others. The EWG ranked 1,200 by levels of potentially dangerous emissions, CBS station WCBS-TV reported.

Phones with some of the highest levels include: T-Mobile My touch & Shadow, Kyocera Jax, Motorola Moto & MOTO VE 240, W 385, C 290, i 335, Blackberry Curve 8330 and Bold 9000.

Dr. Stewart Fleishman treats brain cancer patients and takes his own cell phone precautions, using an earpiece and a shielded case for carrying his phone on his belt. He says no study definitively finds cell phones cause cancer.

"No one has been able to identify a pattern of increasing rates of brain tumors as a result of cell phone usage yet," he said.
Still, many experts admit there is a risk.

"The latest science is showing there may be increased risks for brain tumors and salivary gland tumors for people who use cell phones for a long time," said Jane Houlihan of the Environmental Working Group.

Doctors and manufacturers agree on safety precautions: hold the phone away from your head, talk on speaker phone or with an earpiece, switch which side you talk on and switch the side you carry your phone on your body.

A cell phone industry group responded to the EWG's statements saying "the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, World Health Organization and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration all have concurred that wireless devices are not a public health risk."

Six health agencies around the world recommend limiting exposure to cell phone radiation as well, especially in children, whose skulls are thinner than those of adults.
