Calories, Not Fat Or Carbs, Key To Weight Loss
BOSTON (CBS) ―
The great dietary debate. What will keep those pounds off? Low-fat? Low-carb? High-protein? Atkins, Zone, Ornish?
A federal study says counting calories is what really counts. That, and sticking with it, reports CBS station WBZ-TV in Boston.
The federal study followed more than 800 overweight adults on different diets for two years. Though the diets were twists on commercial plans, the study did not directly compare popular diets.
There was no winner among the different diets; reduction in weight and waist size were similar in all groups.

However, participants had trouble staying with a single approach that long and the weight loss was modest for most. Dieters who got regular counseling saw better results.
Dr. Frank Sacks, researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health and lead author of study, says the study shows people don't need 'fad' diets to lose weight.
The study appears in the
New England Journal of Medicine.
