The cost of going to the doctor can add up quickly. Many people are using the Internet to avoiding taking time off from work, paying for co-pays and for medical tests.
"No Web site can ever take the place of your doctor, but a good site can help you decide whether a visit to your primary care physician is necessary," said CBS station KCNC-TV's Medical Editor Dr. Dave Hnida.
Here are the three Web sites Hnida recommended:
MedicineNet.com -- Hnida called it straightforward, not cluttered, and easy to navigate. He highlighted sections explaining medications and medical tests and procedures.
WebMD.com -- Hnida liked the tips, tools and latest health news. He also liked the step-by-step symptom checker.
MayoClinic.com -- Hnida called this the site with the most in-depth information.
"If you need to know more about symptoms, testing, treatment for making decisions, this is the place to go," Hnida said.
Hnida also offered these tips for surfing the rest of the internet for medical information:
Make sure the information has been written or reviewed by a physician.
Check the date it was written.
The site shouldn't ask for any personal information.
The site shouldn't cost you anything or ask you to buy any products.
