Texas Doctor Performs Unique 'Water' Liposuction

PLANO, Texas (CBS) ― No matter how much you diet and exercise, there are some trouble spots that may never go away. One North Texas doctor claims to have a possible solution, and he's one of only a handful of physician's in the United States offering the unique procedure, reports CBS station KTVT-TV in Dallas.

D'Ann Bickford is a Collin County mother of three and a grandmother. "I had a bit of a 'mommy tummy'," she explained. "I had a lot of fluff. I didn't want to wear low rise jeans."

Bickford recently lost more than 40 pounds and said she still had some 'nagging' problem areas.

After her weight loss, Bickford heard about a new procedure offered by Dr. Jeffrey Caruth at Plano Aesthetics. Caruth is one of the first surgeons in the country to use the body-jet Water-Assisted Liposuction technique.

"It's basically using a high pressure water spray to dislodge the fat cells from the surrounding connective tissue," Dr. Caruth explained.

During the procedure, fluid that is injected into the body carries an anesthetic to numb the area. Then, a thin, fan-shaped, water jet is channeled into the fat tissue. Suction removes the fat cells simultaneously which reduces the trauma generally associated with traditional liposuction.

According to doctors and patients, there's less pain and a shorter recovery time.

According to Dr. Caruth, patients see results immediately. "You can give them [patients] the contour they want and really the contour they'll never get with exercise and diet."

Patients like Bickford often go back to work or normal activity within a few days. "After day two I didn't need any pain medication at all… not even Tylenol," said Bickford.

The Water-Assisted Liposuction procedure is approved by the Food and Drug Administration and costs the same as laser liposuction procedures.

Just as a point of interest, Dr. Caruth says about 20-percent of his patients are men.
