Study Shows Women More Attuned To Body Odor

Deodorant is supposed to get rid of body odor, but that depends on who's doing the smelling.

"The bottom line is that it's quite frankly a little bit easier, much easier to cover up body odor smells in the nose of men, than it is in the nose of women," said Dr. Charles Wysocki, a Behavioural Neuroscientist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center. He conducted the research on body odor.

Experts conducted tests by using sweat sniffers, CBS station KYW-TV reported. Men and women volunteered to come in and smell different viles of sweat. Then fragrance found in deodorant was added.

Men were easily fooled, but women were able to sniff out male body odor, even with the deodorant. It's not so much that men are stinkier, but women have a more perceptive sense of smell.

"I like to think that it's telling of a woman's well, their second sense I guess," said Jennifer Marks, an administrative coordinator at Monell who says she always notices her boyfriends scents no matter what.

"I think that through all of that Axe body spray and deodorant you can still smell the fair scent of the man," said Jennifer.

Scientists say the female sense of smell is evolutionary. Odor plays a subconscious role in finding a mate.

"It makes sense that a woman should tap into every bit of available information that is in a potential mate and this includes a sense of smell," said Dr. Wysocki.
