It's been 20 years since an alt rock group called Smashing Pumpkins came together in Chicago and went on to be one of the most celebrated bands of the 1990s.
The group is celebrating the milestone with four sold-out shows beginning Tuesday. They will perform Tuesday and Wednesday night at the Chicago Theatre, 175 N. State St. They also have two shows at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, 50 E. Congress Pkwy., on Saturday and Sunday.
After gaining rock legend status with albums such as
Siamese Dream and
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, but disbanded in 2000.
The group reunited in 2005, but the only remaining original members are guitarist and lead singer Billy Corgan, an Elk Grove Village native, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, a native of Joliet.
