Ringo Starr Celebrates 68th Birthday In Chicago

Fab Four Drummer Asked For Fans To Join Him In Moment Of Peace And Harmony

CHICAGO (CBS) ― So, what do you get a rock star for his birthday when he has everything?

Monday, on a trip to Chicago, Ringo Starr asked for peace and love.

CBS 2's Vince Gerasole reports the drummer for the Fab Four celebrated his 68th birthday here in Chicago and invited fans from all over the world to join him in a moment of love and harmony.

Starr asked fans in New York Los Angeles and England to join in his noon time "love-fest."

Two hundred fans dodged raindrops outside the Hard Rock Hotel Monday to help Starr celebrate the big day and wished, at the stroke of noon, for a better tomorrow.

"You just got to do what you do and this is what I am doing," Starr said.

When Starr and the Beatles burst on the world music scene in 1963 their sound was rooted in rock and roll, but as they matured their anthems expressed a search for harmony and inner peace.

"One minute, one day, one month, one year everyone will go peace and love," Starr said.

"Peace and love, peace and love -- keep the message going," Karen Swiat said.

The Swiats came as a family from Tinley Park, wishing for peace and capturing a piece of Starr on their cameras.

"I saw the top of his head and his ears, but that counts," Laura Swiat said.

Starr is selling tickets for his concert tour, which stops at Northerly Island this Sunday.

Last year for his birthday he said he got some groovy presents -- all in a box with lots of diamonds.
