Chicago Named No. 5 Music City In North America

Society of American Travel Writers: "It's All Here, All The Time"

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Chicago has been named among the top 10 music cities in North America in a poll of professional travel journalists and photographers. The Society of American Travel Writers ranked Chicago as the No. 5 destination for live music.

"Chicago's reputation as home of the blues can't be understated, with live shows available at clubs every night. The diverse neighborhoods and city-sponsored events also offer live music, from Old Town School of Folk Music to Lollapalooza in Grant Park and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. It's all here, all the time," said SATW member and freelance travel writer Laurie Borman.

New Orleans took the top spot, followed by New York City; Austin, Texas; Nashville, Tenn.; Chicago; Memphis; Montreal; Las Vegas; Branson, Missouri; and Denver.

"Travel should involve all five senses, and one of the great travel experiences is listening to live music in the places where it originated or in spectacular settings," said SATW president, Bea Broda.

Chicago recently hosted the annual Lollapalooza music festival earlier this month, the fourth consecutive year the festival organized by Jane's Addiction front man Perry Ferrell has been held at Grant Park. The park also hosts the annual Chicago Blues Fest every summer.

Nearby Millennium Park also regularly hosts free concerts at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in the summer, the annual Taste of Chicago features dozens of live music performances and Ravinia in north suburban Highland Park is a popular spot for outdoor music on an almost daily basis from June to mid-September.

In 2005, the Chicago Park District opened Charter One Pavilion on Northerly Island, a temporary concert venue on the northern end of the island and in recent years, Wrigley Field has hosted concerts by Jimmy Buffett, The Police, Rascal Flatts and Elton John and Billy Joel.

Also, Rock band U2 will kick off the first North American leg of its U2 360° tour next month. And the city is also home to countless other concert venues from neighborhood bars to the United Center.
