Spears Remains Hospitalized After Custody Dispute

LAPD, Fire Department, Paramedics Respond To Alleged Custody Dispute

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― Pop star Britney Spears was being evaluated at a hospital on Friday to determine what substance she took before LAPD officers came to her Studio City home to resolve a custody dispute involving her two young sons, authorities said.

People.com is reporting that Spears is on a 72-hour lockdown for mental health evaluation.

Also transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center by a second ambulance was Spears' younger son, 1-year-old Jayden James, according to various celebrity news sites such as TMZ.com. With police saying no one had been hurt, the reason for the boy's hospitalization was not clear.

Shortly before midnight, the 26-year-old Spears was taken out of her home on a gurney and taken to Cedars-Sinai by a Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance, with several Los Angeles Police Department squad cars following behind.

A picture posted on TMZ.com shows Spears inside the ambulance smiling inexplicably.

Spears was being detained and evaluated because officers found her under the influence of an unknown substance, said Officer Jason Lee, an LAPD spokesman.

Spears' ex-husband, Kevin Federline, and her attorney were seen arriving at the hospital a short time later, an On Scene Video camera crew reported from the scene. Her father, Jamie, reportedly later showed up as well.

LAPD officers had been called to Spears' home around 8 p.m. Thursday to resolve a custody dispute, Lee said.

Reports are that police were summoned after Spears defied court-mandated custody hours by refusing to turn over her sons -- Jayden James and 2-year-old Sean Preston -- to Federline.

Federline's bodyguard was supposed to pick the children up at 7 p.m. but Spears refused to let them go, it was reported.

"Officers are trying to resolve the issue peacefully and legally by court order," Lee said as the incident was under way.

Fire Department paramedics and an ambulance arrived at the Spears home around 10:30 p.m. The two children were turned over to Federline around 10:50 p.m. after LAPD officers reviewed court documents, Lee said.

Police made no mention of Jayden James' reported hospital visit.

"There were no reportable injuries to anyone involved," Lee said.
