Rapper DMX Pleads Guilty In Miami Drug Case

MIAMI (CBS) ― Rap star DMX has pleaded out a Miami drug case and now awaits extradition to face more charges in Arizona, reports CBS station WFOR-TV in Miami.

The 37-year-old rapper and actor, whose real name is Earl Simmons, pleaded guilty Wednesday to attempted marijuana and cocaine possession and was sentenced to time served. His lawyer Bradford Cohen says DMX is still in custody waiting for Arizona authorities to pick him up on drug and animal cruelty charges there.

Cohen says the rapper decided to plead guilty when he was denied bail earlier this week due to the outstanding Arizona warrant. During that court appearance, Simmons called the judge an expletive when bail was denied.

"Oh that just ingratiated you to me. I've never heard the "f' word before so it's okay," was the response from Judge Lawrence Schwartz.

Cohen says if he hadn't pleaded out, Simmons would have had to sit in jail in Miami until an October trial date.

DMX was arrested and jailed in Miami on August 14th . He was taken into custody outside a Wal-Mart store in North Miami Beach.

DMX has had legal trouble in the past. He was arrested in July in Phoenix on suspicion of using a false identity to defraud a hospital. Over the last three months he has been arrested at least four other times, including for alleged animal cruelty, driving without a valid license, drug possession and failing to appear in court.
