Stretch Your Dollar: 20 Healthy Foods Under $1
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Believe it or not, you can eat healthy foods and spend a dollar or less per serving. It all starts at the supermarket, where it's pretty easy to stretch your dollar.
Registered dietitian Dawn Jackson-Blatner helped us calculate the savings.
She says spinach is a real steal, at about 17 cents for 2 cups. That's on sale, but it's still less than 50 cents for 2 cups at full price.
Butternut squash serves up immune-boosting vitaminĀ A at about 86 centsĀ per serving.
"It's seasonal and that makes it a lot less expensive," Jackson-Blatner said.
Canned beans are packed with protein, iron, fiber and potassium, and they run about 25 cents for a half-cup serving.
If you skip the coffee shop you can brew a pot for 50 cents or less per cup. And, drinking 2 cups a day could lower your risk of diabetes by 30 percent.
But the best deal we found: heart-healthy whole oats.
"When you're getting oatmeal in a larger package, it's only 11 cents a bowl," Jackson-Blatner said.
