Stretch Your Dollar: Do-It-Yourself Beauty

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Everyone wants to look like a million bucks, but business is down at salons and more women are going the do-it-yourself route - buying products to do their own beauty treatments. In Wednesday night's Stretch Your Dollar, CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot shows you how to get that salon look at home.

Hair: washed, blow dried and styled.

Nails: polished to perfection.

In this tough economy, getting the look you want comes with a cost.

"The basic manicure is $15 and basic pedicure, which is $30," said Megan Parr, Sanctuary Nail Spa.

"$45 and up for color," said Andy Dinkha, Andy's Hair Studio.

Andy's Hair Studio owner Andy Dinkha says he's not seeing regulars as often.

"There's a lot of clients trying to stretch their appointments," Dinkha said.

Women like Zaga Arsic, a busy Chicago realtor and married mother of one, are dying their own hair.

"Yesterday, I just colored my hair," Arsic said. "I put him to sleep around 8, and then by 9, I had my color."

A conditioning semi-permanent color will do the trick for many women.

"It's basically used for gray blending, enhancing your color and brightening your color," said Cheryl Greene, Sally Beauty Supply.

It can last for up to eight washes. The cost? Just $4.79.

For quick root touch-ups, try a hair color mascara wand. That's just $5.29.

Another hair color extending tip: use sulfate-free shampoos. At $6 a bottle, it can extend your color by two weeks.

There are products you can use to extend the life of your manicure, too. A good top coat will cost you just under $10.

Arsic also does her own manicures and pedicures in no time at all.

"It's really easy," she said.

For flawless feet, Greene suggests using the $9.99 Ped Egg on dry feet first, and then:

"You can use a Pumi Bar in the shower," Greene said.

The combination of the Pumi Bar and Ped Egg leaves feet silky soft. The cost for both products is under $13.

The Ped Egg is not only a top seller at Sally Beauty Supply; at Walgreens, they're constantly re-ordering it.

"We're selling upwards of 24 to 30 a week," said Walgreens manager Nicolas Legallo.

Image experts say if you don't have the money for frequent salon visits, it's worth spending the time on some do-it-yourself beauty.

"The world responds to you, better, based on you looking better and looking more like yourself," said Kali Evans-Raoul, The Image Studios.
