Winter Parking Ban Begins Tuesday
Ban Covers City Streets From 3 -7 a.m. Dec. 1 - April 1, Regardless of Snow.
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Chicago's Department of Streets and Sanitation is warning motorists that the city's winter overnight parking ban begins Tuesday.
The parking ban covers about 107 miles of city streets from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. Dec. 1 through April 1 -- regardless of snow, according to a statement from the city's Department of Streets & Sanitation.
Motorists should not park their vehicles on these streets Monday night because they will be in violation Tuesday morning.
Signs for the seasonal restriction are permanently posted. Violators will receive a $50 ticket, a minimum $150 towing fee and a daily storage fee of $10 that will increase over time, the department said.
A separate seasonal parking ban could be activated during a heavy snow on another 500 miles of main streets when there are two or more inches of snow on the street, according to the department. That ban has no time restrictions and is in effect year round.
Signs for the heavy snow parking-ban are also permanently posted.
"These routes are critical and need to be kept up and running at all times so that emergency vehicles, buses and cars are able to get through," Streets & Sanitation Commissioner Thomas G. Byrne said in the statement.
