Web Sites Give Retirees Help Re-Entering Workplace

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Do you already dream of retirement? Think you'll want to pick up that gold watch in your 50s? You might want to think again!

More Americans are working longer by choice, even starting new careers in their 50s and 60s. CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports on a new generation of job search Web sites just for the "mature" set.

Dr. Robert Lew spent most of his life saving people, and after 25 years he decided to retire. But after a few months he changed his mind.

"I wanted to continue to do something productive and something in my professional field," Lew said.

So now Lew works with a pharmaceutical company, studying new drug compounds. He found the job through YourEncore.com, one of a slew of new job sites aimed at people 50 and older. The sites connect retirees with companies offering all kinds of opportunities, from retail to health care and more.

"There's a demand for teachers and also for adjunct teachers and classroom aids and tutors," said David Bank of Civic Ventures. "There's demands in particular in science and engineering."

Terry Etter, a retired entrepreneur, found her job on RetirementJobs.com. She also found tips, resumes, interviewing and information about age discrimination. She now works in banking.

"I like working with the people I'm with. Most of them are much younger than I am," Etter said.

RetirementJobs.com features companies that are age-friendly. Some sites include international opportunities, some volunteer work, but each site offers a wealth of information.

Lew and Etter love their new jobs, and don't plan on retiring for good anytime soon.

"As long as the work is challenging and allowing me to learn new things, I'll continue to do it," Lew said.

These sites are typically free to use. Salaries run the gamut, depending on the field. As with any job search site, Bank says retirees should be aware of privacy issues whenever posting resumes online.
