Post Offices Open Late For Last-Minute Tax Filing
Taxes Due April 17
CHICAGO (STNG) ―
Because tax day, April 15, falls on a Saturday, the deadline for filing state and federal income taxes is Monday, April 17, and the U.S. Postal Service is extending hours at some of its post office locations to accommodate the expected rush of late filers, according to a release. The USPS estimates that nationwide, there will be 44 million additional pieces of mail sent on Monday, the majority being last-minute tax returns.
According to the release, two Chicago post offices will be open until midnight on Monday, April 17 -- the Graceland Finance branch at 3024 N. Ashland and the Grand Crossing office at 7715 S. Cottage Grove. Open until 9 p.m. will be the post office locations at 3319 N. Cicero, 11600 W. Irving Park Rd., 2405 N. Sheffield, 4850 N. Broadway, 6037 S. Kedzie, 1805 W. Monterey and 5645 S. Archer.
The Cardiss Collins facility on the second floor at 433 W. Harrison is open 24 hours a day and will accept and cancel returns until midnight. Also the Postal Service mobile van will be in the parking lot of the Hyde Park Co-op parking lot at 1526 E. 55th St. from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday.
To make tax day less taxing, Staples is offering free copies of returns at the Cardiss Collins post office from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Monday, and free food samples will be available from KFC, the release said.
