Stretch Your Dollar: Sell Your Old Devices Online

CHICAGO (CBS) ― If you have a house full of old cell phones, digital cameras and music players - listen up. There are websites that will buy your old devices and help you "stretch your dollar."

Some sites specialize in iPods or cell phones; others accept a wider variety of goods from cameras to laptops.

"You go to the site and it allows you to walk through and identify what the gadget is by make, model, age, condition," said Lance Ulanoff of PC Magazine. "Once you've gone through all of that, it gives you a value or an appraisal."

Melissa Dombrowski found that it pays to look around.

"One site offered me $20 for a camera; another site would offer me $60 for that camera," Dombrowski said.

She also realized little things make a big difference.

"Do you have the original software? Do you have the manual? Do you have the box? All of which I was like no, no, no and no. So I'm going to get $10 for my item," Dombrowski said.

But Rita McGrath got $115 for a $159 GPS unit and she said, "I got $174 for the cell phone I traded in."

To protect yourself, it's not a bad idea to check out eBay or Craigslist to see what a similar device is going for.
