Obama, Biden Make First Campaign Stop Since DNC
BEAVER, Pa. (CBS) ―
Thousands packed Irvine Park in Beaver as Democratic Presidential Nominee Sen. Barack Obama and his running mate Sen. Joe Biden kicked off their battleground state bus tour.
It was their first campaign appearance after officially receiving the Democratic nomination. Approximately 8,000 to 10,000 people turned out for the event at Irvine park. Local officials say the fact that Obama chose Beaver shows how important the county is in the general election.
"We are one of the 13 counties in the whole United States that a Democrat must win, must win to get elected President and I think that's one of the main reasons why they're here," Commissioner Tony Amedio, D-Beaver County, said.
Right on the heels of Obama's visit to western Pennsylvania, Sen. John McCain and his running mate Alaska Governor Sarah Palin will have a rally at Consol Energy Park in Washington on Saturday. There are no more tickets for the event, but McCain's campaign says people without tickets won't be turned away, but they must bring photo ID.
