United To Head To Willis Tower, Effective In 2010

Official Announcement Made Thursday

CHICAGO (CBS) ― It's now official. United Airlines is moving its operational center to the Willis Tower, effective next year.

The move will bring United's management, administrative, accounting, IT and crew planning/daily operations jobs from the current operational headquarters in at 1200 E. Algonquin Rd. in Elk Grove Township.

The airline expects the new offices to greatly improve the overall working environment for employees, creating an updated, technologically advanced, centrally located and LEED-certified workspace.

Mayor Richard M. Daley was on hand Thursday to announce the move.

"We believe that Chicago is the ideal place to run a business, because our city offers tremendous economic strength and resources combined with an enhanced quality of life," Mayor Daley said in a news release. "During this tough economy, United's move is a show of confidence in Chicago and our economic future. This is a positive moment for our city."

The move will bring United's operations employees closer to colleagues at its world headquarters at 77 W. Wacker Drive, where 630 employees currently work.

United said previously that it could not afford to spend the $50 million it would take to upgrade their Elk Grove Village space.

The Elk Grove building was also the airline's corporate headquarters until 2006, when United took advantage of tax breaks and moved into the city of Chicago and moved to the Wacker Drive building.
