Marshall Field's Changes To Macy's In September

by Joanie Lum
CHICAGO (CBS) ― Future plans for Marshall Field's in Chicago are taking shape this morning.

In the fall, Macy's will officially replace the legendary field's name on its stores.

But CBS 2's Joanie Lum reports Macy's announced a one-time made-in-Chicago classic may return home.

The head of Federated Department Stores, the new owner of Marshall Field's, says he wants to restore the beloved Frango mint tradition in Chicago.

There will be samples, dessert items and perhaps something bigger down the road as Marshall Field's makes its transformation into Macy's.

In the fall, the name will change to Macy's on State Street, but Federated Department Stores says all of the Field's traditions will remain, such as the great tree at Christmas, the flea market and the annual flower show.

There will be a Franco mint display kitchen in the store to show shoppers how the beloved chocolates are made. And officials are pushing to bring Frango mint production back to Chicago.

"We're going to work very hard to move production to Chicago. I had dinner with the mayor last night, as I've done when I've come to Chicago in the past. I know that's an important issue on his agenda and it makes a lot of sense to me," said Federated Stores CEO Terry Lundgren.

"I told 'em, you need a facility," Daley said. "We'll build one on the Near West Side because people can get jobs."

The chairman of federated says the company understands how important State Street Marshall Field's memories have been to Chicagoans.

Those green awnings will go black in September when Marshall Field's becomes Macy's on State, but the old metal Marshall Field and Company signs will stay on, and so will much of the old store's traditions because customers demanded it.

"This is where we were our best as Chicagoans," said the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce's Jerry Roper. "We love Marshall Field's, and we want that tradition preserved."

Federated will also launch a four-year plan to restore and upgrade the historic building's interior and exterior.

And Macy's will sponsor the Fourth of July fireworks on July 3.
