2006 Tax Information

Deadline To File: April 17, 2007

(CBS) It's that time of year again: The weather's getting warmer, flowers are starting to bloom, birds are starting to sing and you're rushing to get your taxes done on time. Again.

You can relax a little this year – the deadlines for state and federal taxes have been extended from April 15 to April 17 because the traditional deadline falls on a Sunday, and the day after is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia. But don't delay. There seem to be complications every year, whether it's a change in the tax code or common lifestyle changes such as buying a home, getting married or having children. Even genius Albert Einstein had problems with taxes, stating: "The hardest thing in the world to understand is income tax."

Making this year's filing a little easier can make getting that refund check in the mail even sweeter, so use this tax preparation guide to help you report to Uncle Sam. Find out what the state and federal laws are, discover where you can get free preparation help, learn how to avoid those lines at the post office and much more.
