Baby Gorilla Finally Gets A Name
His Name Means "One Who Will Succeed."
by Vince Gerasole
BROOKFIELD (CBS) ―
The newest gorilla at Brookfield Zoo now has a name, and it's thanks to suggestions from viewers here at CBS 2 and zoo visitors.
His name is Bakari, which is Swahili for "one who will succeed."
Mary Ann Wolff is the woman who came up with the name. So how did she select it?
"Because of his mother and her gentleness and what seems to be her wisdom and maternal instincts and how they can't help but give him a good start in life," the Bolingbrook resident said.
Bakari's mother is Binti, the hero gorilla who saved the day in 1996 by carefully picking up a boy who fell into a Brookfield Zoo exhibit.
"He is a great little guy to add to this gorilla group," said Craig Demitros, senior keeper at Tropic World.
Bakari will be two months old on Saturday, and he's starting to get his first few teeth.
You can visit Bakari and Binti at the zoo's Tropic World exhibit.
