Unemployment was up again in July in Illinois, although only by a tenth of a percent to 10.4 percent.
In total, the state lost 13,000 jobs in July 2009, but the pace of job losses has slowed down in the past four months, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.
The total number of unemployed Illinoisans went up for the tenth consecutive month to 692,500. That is the highest level since April 1983. Meanwhile, nearly 5.7 million people held payroll jobs in July, the fewest since May 1996.
The manufacturing sector shrunk in July for the 18th consecutive month, although the loss of 2,000 jobs was the smallest decline in nine months, the department said. There were 600 jobs lost in professional and business services, compared with 1,400 in the three months prior, and 31,100 in the months before that. Employment in construction jobs were unchanged.
But jobs were way down in the trade, transportation utilities sector. There were 5,400 jobs lost in that sector in Illinois, the greatest loss in four months.
Nationally, the July unemployment rate for July was 9.4 percent, a drop of 0.1 percent from last year.
