Company Helps Moms Find Part-Time Jobs

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Many stay-at-home moms are heading back to work because of the failing economy, and a new company is making it easier for them to go from potty training to back on the payroll. CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman reports that you can get this help for free!

It is cost-free and it started back in 2004 in Denver, Colorado. Since then, '10 til 2' has placed more than 1,100 job candidates in part-time positions in 10 major cities.

They are opening more offices every month. It comes at a time when the Bureau of Labor Statistics says part-time work is growing.

Stephanie Gathe stayed home for her daughters, and now she wants to go back to work for them.

"These are my two daughters," Gathe said. "I think I need to be a strong woman."

Gathe wants to set an example for the girls, and to pitch in for the family in these tougher financial times.

"Oh, definitely, because our assets, equity in the house, my IRA, their college funds - they've all gone down," Gathe said.

So while she continues her side business, making jewelry, she's also looking for a part-time white collar job that will put her degrees to use, and still allow her to be the very busy parent she is.

When asked if she thought there were part-time options available, Gathe said, "initially, not, and that's when I heard about '10 til 2.'"

It's a placement service that puts college-educated professionals into longer-term part-time positions. It's online. If you're a candidate, you don't pay anything. All you have to do is answer some questions and submit your resume to start the professional matchmaking.

Across the country, the firm has placed positions ranging from attorneys to I.T. consultants.

Franchise owner Terrie Nolen says companies pay her to find the candidates and screen them - especially in the current economy.

"A lot of companies still have work that needs to get done, and they don't necessarily want to pay the expense of a full-time employee," Nolen said.

Gathe said she is satisfied with the hits she has gotten on the site.

"Yes, I have been, and I look forward to getting more," she said.

The '10 til 2' franchise owner says she doesn't just wait for companies to find her candidates. She reaches out to them when she sees something post, and has someone who fits the bill.

She and the other Illinois office are new, but she says the concept is picking up slowly but surely. There have been about 10 placements here so far.
